Presidio History

Spanning back to the native Ohlone people, this historic settlement spent nearly 30 years under Mexican rule before being turned over to the U.S. Army. For over 148 years, the Presidio served as a preeminent military post, largely cleansing the area of its former windswept dunes and scrub. Now, this historic landmark operates as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, allowing visitors to explore the area's vast history and landscape in retrospect.

National Historic Trails

Explore the beauty of the Bay Area when you follow one of Presidio's many hiking trails. Totaling over 25 miles, these scenic routes offer unspoiled views of San Francisco's landmark attractions, including the Presidio's historic architecture and Alcatraz Island. Try any one of the park's numerous trails, including the Golden Gate Promenade, Coastal Trail, Presidio Promenade, and the Bay Area Ridge Trail, for an all-day getaway along the coast.

  • Are there any attractions for kids at the Presidio?

Yes, park staff work diligently to develop interdisciplinary issue-oriented curriculum, using the Presidio's historic landmarks, ancient redwood groves, and native habitats as an educational resource. You can also take a family hike, watch the sunset, and camp.
  • What are some of the Presidio's natural features?

Approximately 800 acres of the Presidio are dedicated as open space, and 145 acres are native plant communities, including 14 threatened, endangered, or candidate species. Guests will frequently see serpentinite and other subduction zone-related rocks exposed along the coastal bluffs of the Bay.
