Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco

Palace of Fine Arts. A remnant of San Francisco 's glorious past, the Palace of Fine Arts is an exquisite arts-and-science complex that thrives in the Marina District . Designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck, this marvel was constructed in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and the rebirth of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake.

With its crumbling dome and enduring Corinthian columns, the Palace of Fine Arts is home to the Exploratorium, an interactive science museum, as well as a 1,000-seat theater that's ideal for events, including the stunning Ethnic Dance Festival, film festivals, lectures and concerts. The Palace of Fine Arts features a tranquil park replete with natural beauty. The lagoon is favored by ducks, swans and some amorous turtles.

Roman in architectural style and Greek in decorative treatment, the exceptional harmony and beauty of the Palace of Fine are reflected in the water and against the San Francisco sky. Today, the Palace is a popular destination for pictures and photographs, and many movie scenes have been filmed at this beloved Marina District attraction.  [Top]
